Eagle Scout Mural Project

A happy, colorful painting in our church’s 6th Street parking lot, invites all people, no matter what color or age or orientation, to come worship with us at Wesley UMC. This wonderful mural on the side of the church’s storage cargo bin was designed and painted by Troop 201 Boy Scout Roman Young, as his Eagle Scout service project. Our church Board of Trustees (BOT) welcomed Scout Roman’s proposal of a mural, because the 6th St. cargo bin was a constant target for graffiti. Our BOT Tuesday Crew men were constantly re-painting and re-applying graffiti repellant. For the mural, BOT appointed a church member subcommittee to work with Roman on a design which would share a message from our church, and reviewed and approved Roman’s technical plans.
An Eagle Scout service project benefiting a non-profit organization, is one of the requirements for a Scout to earn the rank of Eagle, the highest rank in Scouting. The Scout plans and manages his service project to meet the needs of the non-profit beneficiary. He demonstrates leadership by organizing and directing the work of Scout helpers, and completes documentation of his project. Eagle service projects benefiting Wesley Church are administered by our BOT; BOT reviews each project for safety, durability, maintainability. Over the last 40 years, 30 Eagle service projects have benefited Wesley Church, including our patio benches anchored in concrete, security camera systems, landscaping, the big carts for tables and chairs in the Fellowship Hall, and more.
Scout Roman Young’s mural depicts a welcoming path to our church, framed by brown and white hands forming a heart, cherry blossoms and a peace dove, and a rainbow inviting everyone in. Thank you, Roman, for sharing your talent.
