東方教会 Eastern Churches
ここ暫く、バチカンでのコンクラーベが世界的な注目を浴びていました。言うまでもなくカソリック教会のローマ教皇を選ぶ選挙ですが、昨年の同名の映画も今年のアカデミー賞を受賞しましたし、プロテスタントの教会に属する私たちも、身近に感じる話題です。でも実はキリスト教にはもう一つ、「東方教会」と呼ばれる大きな教派があり、それについては、あまり意識されていなかった方も多いのではないでしょうか。
でも一方で、「ギリシャ正教会（Greek Orthodox Church）」とか「ロシア正教会（Russian Orthodox Church）」と言う呼び名を聞いたことは殆どの人があるのではないでしょうか。それに「ニコライ堂」は、おそらくご存知かと思います。これはロシア正教会の流れを組む日本正教会の東京復活大聖堂の呼び名です。こうした正教会やオリエント教会など東方世界の教会の総称が東方教会です。
この東方教会は大きく三つに分かれます。一つは、先ほどの東方正教会で、1054年の東西教会の分裂の後、ローマ教皇と決別したギリシャ正教会がその始まりでした。正教会では総主教と呼ばれる司祭がロシア正教会、ウクライナ正教会など各教会を統括し、神学的にも独自の見解を持っています。
もう一つは東方典礼カトリック教会、その名の通りローマ教皇に従うのですが、典礼や伝統は東方教会の流れを組んでいます。その生い立ちが、正教会から分離してカソリックと連合したことからも想像できるように、双方の信仰を受け継いでいます。
最後の三つ目は東方諸教会、これは単性説を異端とし、ローマ教皇の主導権を確立した西暦451年のカルケドン公会議を拒否した教会群です。ここにはエチオピア正教会やエジプトのコプト正教会などが属し、古代からの独自の伝統や典礼を守って、正教会とは別の体系を作っています。
こうした夫々の教会が独自の歴史や伝統や信仰の在り方を大切にしているわけで、キリスト教も幅広く奥深い、と思って頂ければ幸いです。

For some time now, the Conclave at the Vatican has been the focus of worldwide attention. Needless to say, it is an election to choose the Pope of the Catholic Church, but the movie of the same name released last year won an Academy Award this year, and it is a topic that we, who belong to a Protestant church, are somewhat familiar with. But in fact, there is another major denomination in Christianity called the "Eastern Church," which I think many of us were not really familiar with.
On the other hand, most people have probably heard of the "Greek Orthodox Church" or the "Russian Orthodox Church. Some of you may also heard of " St. Nikolai Cathedral” in Tokyo. This is the name of the Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral of the Japanese Orthodox Church, which is a branch of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Eastern Churches is the collective name for the churches of the Eastern world, including the Orthodox Churches and the Church of the Orient.
The Eastern Churches are divided into three main groups. One is the Eastern Orthodox Church, which began as the Greek Orthodox Church that broke with the Pope after the schism between the Eastern and Western Churches in 1054. In the Orthodox Church, a priest called the Patriarch oversees the various churches, including the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and has their own theological views.
The other is the Eastern Catholic Churches, which, as the name suggests, follow the Pope, but their liturgy and traditions are in the vein of the Eastern Churches. As one can imagine from its origins, having separated from the Orthodox Church and united with Catholicism, it has inherited the beliefs of both.
The third and final group is the Oriental Orthodox Churches, a group of churches that rejected the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D., which declared Monophysitism a heresy and established papal initiative. The Ethiopian Orthodox Churches and the Coptic Orthodox Churches of Egypt belong to this group, and they have preserved their own ancient traditions and liturgies, creating a system separate from the Orthodox Churches.
Each of these churches has its own history, traditions, and beliefs, and I hope you will understand that Christianity is a broad and deep religion.
Now back to San Jose, the next Nichigo worship service will be on May 25th (Sun) at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel. The message will be given by Rev. Kei Miura of Kiryu Tobu Church in Japan.
