New, old church sign in the Garden

A new, old church sign graces our Garden parking lot on 6th St. The new cedar shingle roof protects a refurbished sign structure displaying a new United Methodist cross and flame sign face.
Our church thanks Scout Donald Nguyen who completed the rebuilding and installation of this Garden sign as his Eagle Scout service project. He presented his sign construction plans to our church Board of Trustees for approval, then directed the work of a crew of scouts and adults. We thank church members Jim Yamaguchi and Jim Higuchi who provided technical guidance and tools.
Our new Garden sign is also “old” because the original fine redwood structure was built by church member Steve Katayama who constructed it as his Eagle Scout service project 30 years ago. Steve worked with Japantown elder Jimi Yamaichi in using Japanese wood joinery techniques and designing the original raised-letter sign face which remains on the opposite side of the sign.
We enjoy our new, old church sign, and thank these two Eagle Scouts at Wesley Church.
Scout refurbished and installed the Garden sign as his Eagle Scout service project.
